Eps 49 - Touring Sulawesi – Makassar to Tanjung Bira - Around Indonesia on my Small Motorcycle

This week, my Grand Motorcycle trip around Indonesia takes us from Makassar, the capital city of South Sulawesi, to the coastal beach town of Tanjung Bira, on the South East coast. I had been there many times when my daughter, who was born in Makassar, was a tiny baby, but that was over 20 years ago. I have to admit that, time, and man-made development, haven’t been kind to Bira. First of all, while the road is in mostly good condition, the constant and sometimes erratic traffic along the way makes the journey a lot less pleasant than what I remembered. Most importantly, Bira is no longer the lovely quiet beach village I remembered with its beautiful stretch of white sand welcoming you to the turquoise bleu ocean. Misguided overdevelopment and concrete structures, including a mosque on concrete stilts, directly on the white sandy beach where we used to enjoy the gorgeous blue ocean, sitting in the sand, all of this supposedly aimed at attracting tourism, have left Bira in a rather poor state, which is disappointing to anyone who had witnessed its glory days. Nonetheless, I managed to find a lovely place to spend the night a few kilometres from town, and this eventually lifted my spirit.
