Repair of structures in water is challenging and requires building costly cofferdams. Here the patented SPiRe+ FRP panels are used to repair a damaged bridge pier wall in a river crossing in North Dakota. The 3-ft (900mm) wide panels are bolted to the pier wall; they create an annular space about 3 inches (75mm) wide. The overlapping edges of the panels are sealed to create an impervious formwork. A cementitious grout is mixed on site and pumped Into the annular space. The panels provide the equivalent of No. 6 Grade 60 steel rebars at a spacing of 3.5 inches. Not only the panels add significant strength to the wall, they also serve as a moisture barrier, keeping moisture and oxygen away from the pier wall and preventing its corrosion.
