During the rule of British, Tribals from different parts of Chotanagpur (at present Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha) went to Assam-Bhutan, Bengal and Andaman in search of livelihood. They cleared the forest in Assam-Bhutan, Bengal and made Tea Gardens and places for their community living. They have been working and living there for about 150 years but still they have not got the KHATIYAN, the ownership of the land, where they are living today for ages. This song is asking "What did you gain by working hard day and night in Tea Gardens if you did not get the KHATIYAN?" This song is also trying to say "that still you have time to wake up and if not then you might get 5 Dismil Patta from Govt. or you might move out to Chai Sundri (new small quarters for Tea Labourers).
