MONTGOMERY, Ohio (Scott Dimmich) -- That's the sound of safety at Sycamore. In the wake of the April 9, 1999, F4 tornado that destroyed homes and took lives on the other side of Cornell Road, Sycamore High School Athletic Trainer Perry Denehy worked with district officials to install a lightning prediction system near the athletic fields and courts. Years later, he considers it a success. "It's a level of piece of mind, almost an insurance policy that we know our spectators, athletes, and our coaching staff are protected with this system. It can help the game get back started when the all clear is issued," said Denehy. A few years after the lightning prediction system was installed at Sycamore High School, another was installed at Sycamore Stadium outside of Sycamore Junior High School, where football is played on Friday night. While safety of the fans at a football game is important, Sycamore Junior High School Principal Brian Wallace also knows students are learning to take safety seriously. "At the junior high level, kids are becoming very aware and take responsibility as well. They know when that alarm goes off, they hear it, and they know what the proper responses are," said Wallace. Denehy said, "This system really takes all of the guess work out. It takes away any possibility that an adult or someone in charge may be swayed to keep the events going instead of calling them for safety."
