We’re back with another 2Q25 Earnings deep dive here on the Market Talks Series. In this episode, we take a closer look at the Philippine consumer sector. While 2025 was expected to be a strong year thanks to easing inflation and election spending, Q2 earnings told a different story: Manufacturers struggled with higher input costs, retailers faced margin pressures despite revenue growth, restaurants remained resilient but still felt the pinch. Together with COL’s consumer analysts Denise Joaquin and Rachelle Biacora, let's explore: 2025 is supposed to be a good year for consumer companies due to easing inflation and election spending. That said, what is the reason why most consumer companies still reported weak second quarter profits? [01:16] Manufacturers posted a median profit decline of 9.4%. What were the key drivers behind this weakness? (sales – domestic and international, margins) [02:18] Commodity prices—like coconut oil, palm oil, tuna, cocoa, and coffee—played a big role in squeezing margins. Have we already seen the worse as far as these commodities are concerned? [04:57] Now let’s talk about the restaurants JFC and PIZZA. How were the sales of the two restaurants during the second quarter? [06:40] Where do you attribute the strength of the international segment? [09:39] If the sales of both restaurants were very strong, why was the earnings growth of JFC so low and why was did PIZZA’s profits fall? [11:53] Retailers were mixed with PGOLD, RRHI reporting faster revenue growth in the second quarter and WLCON and SSI reporting weaker revenues during the same period. What is the reason for the difference? [13:33] Despite the 5.9% increase in RRHI’s revenues, why did profits go down by 2.4%? Is this something we should be worried about?
