In this video, Dr Vikas Mittal, MBBS, MD (Pulmonary Medicine) and Senior Consultant & Director of Respiratory Medicine at CK Birla Hospital, explains how to protect your lungs during the monsoon season. With the onset of rains, respiratory infections, allergies, and damp-related problems become more common. Increased viruses, allergens and indoor dampness (which can encourage mold growth) may trigger flare-ups of asthma, COPD, allergies and other lung infections especially in people with existing lung disease. Ways to Protect Your Lungs During the Monsoon Vaccinations Talk to your doctor about seasonal flu (influenza) vaccination it’s recommended each year and about pneumococcal vaccination if you are older or have medical risk factors. These vaccines reduce risk of influenza and pneumococcal pneumonia. Masking & Hygiene Stay away from sick people where possible. Wear a mask when there is high respiratory virus circulation or if you’re ill/exposed, and practice regular handwashing or use hand sanitizer. Humidity Control & Mold Prevention Reduce indoor dampness use exhaust fans, fix leaks, and consider a properly maintained dehumidifier or air-conditioning where needed. Aim to keep indoor humidity low to limit mold growth; clean and maintain appliances regularly. Regular, Safe Exercise Aim for regular activity (for example, ~30 minutes brisk walking most days and muscle-strengthening ≥2 days per week). If you have asthma/COPD, avoid exercising in conditions that trigger symptoms (very humid, poor air quality, or during heavy rains); choose indoor workouts when needed. Medication Adherence Continue all prescribed inhalers and other lung medications as directed. Keep your rescue inhaler handy and review inhaler technique and action plan with your doctor. Seek urgent medical attention if you have persistent cough, high fever, severe breathlessness, confusion, bluish lips/fingertips, or signs of low oxygen (for example, a pulse-ox reading that is concerning per your doctor). If you have chronic lung disease and notice worsening symptoms, contact your healthcare provider promptly.
