Today, Thursday, September 30, 2021, the House Judiciary Committee approved the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement (MORE) Act in a 26-15 vote. This bill would remove cannabis from the Controlled Substances Act and permit people with prior cannabis convictions to expunge their records. The MORE act also includes provisions for reinvestment grant opportunities for communities that have suffered a disproportionate rate of cannabis-related enforcement actions. Additionally, the bill outlines a federal tax for cannabis and numerous protections for immigrants and government workers from being denied citizenship, benefits, or security clearance due to cannabis. The currently incarcerated would also benefit from the language in this bill, with the MORE act detailing pathways for resentencing. The last time the MORE Act was passed, 13 months went by before the bill was approved on the US House of Representatives floor. This time, with Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and allies Cory Booker and Ron Wyden, advocates for cannabis hope federal prohibition will be repealed quickly.
