He was usually the guy you loved to hate. He began his career in the theater before transitioning to film in the late 1930's. Duryea became famous for portraying tough, cynical characters, often as the antagonist. Notable films include The Little Foxes, Scarlet Street, Criss Cross, Too Late for Tears, The Woman in the Window and Double Indemnity (my personal favorite). His work in radio was fairly limited, although he did make appearances on Lux Radio Theater, Suspense (3 episodes), Family Theater and The Hedda Hopper Show. Duryea's distinct voice and intense performances made him a memorable presence in both film and television. He continued working until his death in 1968. Suspense, "radio's outstanding theater of thrills", was one of the premiere programs of the Golden Age of Radio, featuring a who's who of Hollywood stars spread out over its 900+ episodes. Scripts focused on suspense/thriller/mystery plots, typically involving a normal person being thrown into a bizarre or dangerous situation, with the solution withheld until the last moment--often with a surprising twist. Guest stars included Cary Grant, Orson Welles, Frank Sinatra, Agnes Moorehead, Humphrey Bogart, Lucille Ball and Marlene Dietrich. The show ran from 1942 to 1962. Its haunting theme music was written by Academy Award winner Bernard Herrmann, who scored many of Hollywood's most memorable movies, including Psycho, The Birds, Vertigo, Cape Fear, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Citizen Kane and The Man Who Knew Too Much.
