The 1987 Showtime production of Uncle Tom’s Cabin is a faithful dramatization of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s 1852 novel, so these scenes will allow you to contrast its characters and message from clips from other versions, linked below, that have found their way to stage and screen. Learning that her indebted master, George Selby, plans to sell her young son, Eliza escapes with the child across the Ohio River to freedom. Although literate and entrusted by Shelby with supervision of his Kentucky plantation, Tom is sold “down the river” to the deep South’s “Cotton Kingdom,” a common occurrence in the upper tier of Southern states where slaves were often the most valuable commodity produced. Tom is torn away from a clearly close-knit family. Bound for the New Orleans slave market, Tom saves “Little Eva,” whose father, in gratitude, buys Tom and takes him to his Louisiana plantation, where Tom and Eva develop a deep spiritual connection. Redeemed from a cruel master, mischievous Topsy is placed in the care of Eva’s Aunt Ophelia, a native northerner. Eva also tries to rehabilitate Topsy, though Eva’s cough signals that her days are numbered. On her deathbed, Eva extracts a promise from her father to free Uncle Tom. Unfortunately for Tom, Eva’s father is murdered before he can fulfill his promise, and the grieving widow refuses to honor her late husband’s pledge. Tom goes on the auction block and finds himself the property of Simon Legree, a native northerner but the epitome of the evil slave driver. Legree sexually exploits his slave Cassy, and when his attentions turn to young Emmeline, the two women flee. Legree threatens Tom’s life if he does not reveal the women’s escape route, and Tom dies a Christ-like death, inspiring all he has touched by his steadfast faith and inner strength. The escaped slaves from both the Kentucky and Louisiana plantations unite in Canada, and eventually resettle in Liberia.
