Contrary to common advice given on various Baofeng discussion boards to get a better antenna for airband AM reception when someone complains about distorted airband AM audio, perhaps consider getting a less efficient antenna for 118-135 MHz instead to improve the audio when receiving strong signals or install inline attenuators on the antenna feed. These tests were all done using a BF-F8HP Pro and a Moonraker 13-299 Super Gainer Airband Antenna on the roof of my car. I demonstrate the reception of a strong local airport ATIS broadcast first with no attenuation (-79 dBm, distorted audio), 20 dB of attenuation (-98 dBm, far less distortion), and 30 dB of attenuation (-108 dBm, far less distortion, but higher background noise). Observations To improve Baofeng airband AM audio reception: If available, use the dBm value displayed on the radio to check the receive power level and choose an antenna not optimal for 118-135 MHz, or install attenuators as required to provide a lower signal level. On the BF-F8HP Pro, the signal strength where the distortion is minimal seems to be around -98 dBm This may work for other Baofeng radios that have similar issues with distortion on airband AM reception.
