I've been an MMA fan for as long as I can remember. I grew up watching guys like GSP, Jon Jones, Tony Ferguson, and Justin Gaethje turn violence into something that felt like art. I admired them. Still do. There’s something hypnotic about watching two people enter a cage with nothing but their skill, will, and pain tolerance. But as I got older, and especially while writing this essay for my final English project, I started asking myself questions I hadn’t asked before, questions about what we’re really watching, and what we’re really celebrating. This essay “Romanticizing Violence,” was originally written as my final assignment for English class. But it ended up meaning way more to me than just a grade. It’s about the darker side of fight culture that most fans (including me) ignore until it's too late. It’s about what happens when we turn pain into entertainment, and how easy it is to forget that the people we idolize are also the people getting hurt. I used real fighters, guys like Justin Gaethje, Tony Ferguson, Max Holloway not to criticize them, but to show how even the greatest pay a price for the moments we call “legendary.” I still love this sport. I still respect these fighters. But I can’t pretend anymore that the violence we glorify doesn’t come with long-term consequences—trauma, memory loss, broken bodies, and sometimes broken lives. I wrote this piece in my voice, but with intention, emotion, and truth. It’s raw. It’s honest. And I hope it makes other fans think a little deeper about what we’re clapping for. This isn’t me turning against MMA, it’s me trying to respect it more fully, by respecting the cost that comes with it. If this resonated with you, share it. Talk about it. Debate it. This conversation is one fight we actually can win. Thank you for watching and listening. Real respect to every fighter who steps into that cage. You give everything. It’s time we gave a little more back. — Malcolm (JRHairline) #mma #ufc #englishproject #fighting #violence #justingaethje #tonyferguson #combatculture #respectfighters #braintrauma #romanticizingviolence #mmaessay #mentalhealth #warriorculture #maxholloway #fightfan #truthhurts #mmarespect
