Join us on our journey . . . The Picture Gallery and Grand Staircase were built by the Regency architect John Nash for Thomas, 2nd Lord Berwick in 1805-7. Nash's design was flashy but flawed: the roofs leaked from the start and the archive contains bills from workmen having to make good damage caused by rainwater as early as 1807. In an effort to resolve the problem, the National Trust installed a partial secondary roof in the 1970s. This has now reached the end of its life, and we are faced not just with the need, but the opportunity, to put something in its place which is not only fit for purpose but which has an improved environmental performance in terms of the conservation of the interiors below, and also results in a more worthy solution in design terms. After much discussion, study and consultation a preferred solution was found. The new secondary roof will be a flat, planar, glazed solution covering and protecting the whole of Nash's original roof. It will be slightly pitched away from the building, and positioned at a higher level than the current partial secondary roof. It will remove the main risks by draining the rainwater and snow off and away from the roof of the building immediately and efficiently via external rainwater down pipes. It will also incorporate ventilation, ultra-violet protection and the ability to achieve complete black-out (using blinds) to protect the collection in the Gallery below.
