One of the most commonly touted teachings of the Buddha is derived from Satipaṭṭhāna, commonly translated as "Mindfulness". This has made a great impact in the West, where many teachers there have re-defined the essence of mindfulness into various secular and even commercially flavoured packages which reached out to people of various faith. Satipatthana in the first place is not a "religious" or spiritual teaching, it is simply a tool to help us bring the body and mind firstly to a state of calm and composure, and then to let us cultivate more wholesome and peaceful thoughts by helping us observe our bodily and mental activities. Bhante Punnaji has very precisely translated the term "Satipaṭṭhāna" to mean "Introspection". This concise elaboration of Satipaṭṭhāna is an excerpt from a 90-min presentation entitled "Cultivating Mindfulness Based Emotional Composure".
