I was covering Northern Ireland during "The Troubles", specifically Belfast during the 1981 hunger strikes. I also filmed children on the perimeter of Divis Flats, a residential stronghold of the Provisional Irish Republican Army. During this time I was a professor at San Diego State University and a journalist. I was no stranger to the residents of Divis Flats, as I had been traveling to Belfast since the summer of 1974 researching children and political violence. A United Nations Conference took her to the Soviet Union, where she married a second time and founded Moscow Shakespeare and Company Bookstore. As a college professor, her research on playgrounds in troubled countries took her to Belfast, Tehran and Managua. Mary lives between California and Paris, where she created the Paris Writers Group and Paris Writers Atelier.
