The Brownsville Affair of 1906 remains one of the darkest betrayals in U.S. military history. Black Buffalo Soldiers of the 25th Infantry were accused of “shooting up” Brownsville, Texas, after a white bartender was killed and a police officer wounded. With no evidence, President Theodore Roosevelt dishonorably discharged 167 men—erasing their pensions, careers, and honor. The soldiers had been confined to barracks, their rifles showed no signs of being fired, and yet they were condemned without a trial. Civil rights leaders fought for justice, but it wasn’t until 1972 that the Army admitted the truth: the men were innocent all along. By then, nearly all had died—never seeing justice, never reclaiming what was stolen. This is the story of loyalty, betrayal, and America’s long war against its own Black soldiers. ⸻ 📚 Sources: • John D.
