Bristol-Meyers Squibb Co ("BMS") is a drug manufacturer incorporated in Delaware, and with principal place of business in New York/New Jersey. BMS engaged in business activities in California selling some of their drugs, and maintaining labs and sales representatives there. About 1% of their total revenue stream comes from CA.Plaintiffs (86 of which were residents of CA, with 592 from other states around the US) all filed complaints in CA that one of the drugs sold by BMS damaged their health.The nonresident plaintiffs included in the suit did not allege any connection to CA. CA argued that, because the nonresident plaintiff's claims were so similar to the claims brought by the CA plaintiff's claims, and because BMS had maintained extensive contacts with the forum state, all of the claims could be brought in CA together.Accordingly, the CA courts all found that they were able to validly exercise personal jurisdiction over BMS.BMS successfully appealed to SCOTUS.
