"Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town" is a song written by Mel Tillis and most famously performed by Kenny Rogers & The First Edition. It has a rich history and a legacy tied to its poignant and controversial lyrics. This song remains one of the most hard-hitting and emotional tunes I've ever heard and it's always been one of those songs that no matter where I was or what I was doing....I'd find a way to listen to it until the end! Really wish I had a more upbeat tune for this visualization, I'm sure we could all use it about now. About the Song Written by Mel Tillis in the early 1960s, and originally recorded by country artist Johnny Darrell in 1967, where it became a hit on the country charts. Kenny Rogers and The First Edition recorded their version in 1969, bringing the song to a much wider audience. The song tells the story of a disabled war veteran pleading with his wife, Ruby, not to cheat on him while he is confined to his chair. The lyrics are poignant and filled with emotional tension, exploring themes of love, betrayal, and despair. The narrative reflects the struggles of soldiers returning from war (often associated with the Vietnam War during the 1960s), although the song’s original inspiration was likely related to World War II or the Korean War. The song’s frank portrayal of infidelity and the emotional toll of war made it both impactful and, at times, controversial. A blend of country and pop, which was a signature style for Kenny Rogers and The First Edition during this period. Peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. Reached #2 on the UK Singles Chart. Became one of the band’s most iconic hits, establishing Kenny Rogers as a star. The song remains one of Kenny Rogers' most recognized performances, even though it predates his solo career. It has been covered by various artists, including Waylon Jennings and Roger Miller, demonstrating its lasting appeal. "Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town" is often praised for its emotional depth and storytelling. About the audio: Sparky sprinkled lotsa his magic dust on this old beauty! Wow. About the video: It's been a bit longer stretch than usual for a new vid, and I wish I could say that the wait would be worth it because it resulted in something really special, however the fact is that the delay was mostly due to serious computer issues (which have now been resolved, I hope). You may notice the style and quality shifts in this one more than usual, that's due to the fact that some of the clips were created months ago and some are freshly produced. I tried to update some of the AI and had mostly good results, but for a couple shots, I could never replicate the feel of the older clips. [Lyrics] You've painted up your lips and rolled and curled your tinted hair Ruby, are you contemplating going out somewhere? The shadow on the wall tells me the sun is going down Oh, Ruby Don't take your love to town It wasn't me that started that old crazy Asian war But I was proud to go and do my patriotic chore And yes, it's true that I'm not the man I used to be Oh, Ruby I still need some company It's hard to love a man whose legs are bent and paralyzed And the wants and the needs of a woman of your age, Ruby, I realize But it won't be long I've heard them say until I'm not around Oh, Ruby Don't take your love to town She's leaving now 'cause I just heard the slamming of the door The way I know I've heard it slam one hundred times before And if I could move I'd get my gun and put her in the ground Oh, Ruby Don't take your love to town Oh, Ruby For God's sakes turn around
