Congenital Dislocation of the Hip (CDH)—also known as Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH)—is a condition where the hip joint is improperly formed or dislocated at birth. It affects the ball-and-socket joint of the hip, where the head of the femur (thigh bone) doesn't sit securely in the acetabulum (hip socket)2. 🧬 Causes & Risk Factors: Genetic predisposition (family history of DDH) Breech presentation during birth Firstborn children Female infants (more commonly affected) Low amniotic fluid during pregnancy Tight swaddling of legs after birth3 🩺 Signs & Symptoms: Uneven leg lengths Limited range of motion in one leg Asymmetrical skin folds on thighs or buttocks Clicking or popping sounds during hip movement Limping, toe-walking, or waddling gait as the child begins to walk In some cases, no visible symptoms at birth2 🔍 Diagnosis: Physical exam at birth and during well-baby visits Ortolani and Barlow tests to detect hip instability Ultrasound (for infants under 6 months) X-rays (for older infants and toddlers) 🛠️ Treatment Options: Treatment depends on the age of the child and severity of the dislocation: 👶 For Newborns: Pavlik harness: A soft brace that holds the hips in proper position for 1–2 months 👧 For Older Infants or Toddlers: Closed reduction: Manual repositioning of the hip under anesthesia, followed by casting Open reduction surgery: If closed reduction fails or is not possible Osteotomy: Surgical reshaping of the hip socket or femur in severe cases 🧠 Long-Term Outlook: With early diagnosis and treatment, most children recover fully Untreated DDH can lead to chronic pain, limping, and early-onset arthritis #Hipjoint #Congenital #Dislocation
