For this experiment, Sammy simulated a volcanic eruption using her new Super Science Kit. Thank you tita Tina for this amazing gift 😁 Tools we need: gloves protective goggles volcano model plastic spatula wooden spatula pasteur pipette measuring cup Materials we used: sodium bicarbonate red food colouring wheat flour vinegar Steps: 1. Place the model volcano on a plate so it will not be too messy. 😆 2. Using the plastic spatula, put 3 scoops of the sodium bicarbonate in the volcano model. 3. Again, using the plastic spatula add 2 scoops of wheat flour to the model volcano. Stir the mixture in the volcano model with the wooden spatula. 4. Next get 15ml of vinegar and add red food colouring. Mix it well with the clean wooden spatula. 5. Now we are ready to make a volcano eruption! Pour the red vinegar into the volcano mould and see what happen. NOTE: Always ask adult permission little scientists. All kid scientist needs a assistant so make sure to ask an adult for help. When you finish the experiment, throw away all used ingredients/food. Attention kid scientist! This is not what happens in a real volcanic eruption. This experiment just allow us to simulate one. Explanation: In this experiment we simulate what happens during an effusive eruption through a chemical reaction, specifically a acid-base reaction. Vinegar has in its composition an acid, acetic acid while sodium bicarbonate is a base. This way when mixed with an acid, baking soda decomposes and release gas which is carbon dioxide.
