Desi Oakley (who originated the role of Jenna in the first national tour of Waitress and appeared on Broadway in Chicago, Wicked, and other musicals) and Bonnie Milligan (Tony Award winner for Kimberly Akimbo) sing "A Love That's True," from the new musical The History of Light by Michael W. Small. (Arrangement and instrumentals by TeaTime Jones; additional lyrics by Michael Small) In "The History of Light," Alice (Desi Oakley) feels torn between her goals as a woman's rights activist in 1886 New York City and her desire to please her husband by starting a family. She finds encouragement from her new friend Emma, who is also fighting for the rights of working women. Their duet is adapted from "Love Is A Plaintive Song" from Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta "Patience." Set against the backdrop of the Haymarket Riots and the Statue of Liberty dedication, The History of Light invokes the feeling of the times with reinvented versions of 16 Gilbert and Sullivan songs, the era's most popular music. The History of Light has been presented in readings at New York City's HOWL Festival and at L.A.'s La Mirada Theater. Enjoyed this?
