This online lesson considers the destruction of the nomadic way of life of the Plains Indians in the period from c. 1870 to c.1890. It begins with a look at the events and consequences of the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876. It then goes on to consider the role of destroying the buffalo, the reservations, the Dawes Act and assimilation in eroding Indian lifestyles. It concludes with the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890 and brings it together with a practice exam question. The lesson is intended to last around an 90 minutes to 150 minutes, depending on the depth of reading and note-taking and length of linked videos watched. This lesson is designed to compliment the Edexcel GCSE History specification The American West c.1836 to c.1895. It should also be useful to anyone studying the history of the American West.
