Dash Cam Drive through Dunbar, Institute and West Virginia State University

TRANSCRIPT West Virginia State University, also known as WVSU and located in Institute, West Virginia, is a historically black university that was established in 1891 as the West Virginia Colored Institute, it has a rich history of providing accessible higher education to diverse student populations. After desegregation in the 1950s, the university made a transition to a predominantly white commuter school. In fact, my dad attended West Virginia State in the 1960s after he graduated from High School in nearby Lincoln County. Dunbar, established in 1921 across the river from South Charleston. Mostly residential today, Dunbar is the former home of Dunbar Glass, Kanawha Glass and Gravely Tractor company. I’m Michael Miller and it’s time for a dash cam drive through Dunbar and Institute West Virgina and West Virginia State University on Dash Cam Travels! Our drive starts in Dunbar on 12th Street. We head north and turn right onto Myers Avenue. At the end of Myers Avenue, we turn left onto 10th Street and cross the Kanawha River Railroad. At Interstate 64, we take a left onto Fairlawn Avenue, following West Virginia Route 25. We pass the Shawnee Sports Complex and the entrance to the West Virginia State Police Academy as we enter the unincorporated town of Institute. We enter the campus of West Virginia State University and turn left onto Barron Drive, which travels towards the Kanawha River along the western boundary of the University. Next, we turn left onto Faculty Circle and enter the West Virginia State University Faculty House Historic District. At the end of the street, we turn left for a brief drive on College Drive and then right onto Athletic Drive, passing Calvin Bailey Field, home of the WVSU men’s baseball team and Lady Jackets Field, home of the WVSU women’s Softball team. Next, we turn left onto Washington Avenue, before turning left back onto Fairlawn Avenue and WV Route 25. As we leave campus and Institute, we enter the City of Nitro, pass the Interchange with Interstate 64 and pass an intersection with WV Route 622, Goff Mountain Road. We also pass the Bayer Institute Chemical Plant which garnered much attention in the 1984 when it eas owned by Union Carbide Corporation as a manufacturer of methyl isocyanate, the chemical that was accidentally released at Union Carbide's Bhopal, India plant killing an estimated 3,800 people.
