Gospel classics are songs that are special, they've been around for a long time. We all know them word for word; love them, they have a special meaning in our lives, and they will never be forgotten. The song-Close To Thee, was written by Fanny Jane Crosby(1820-1915), in 1874. Fanny Crosby was born in the little village of Southeast, Putnam County, New York. Six weeks after her birth she lost her eyesight. Her eyes became, inflamed; Mr. Crosby called in a local physician who applied hot poultices, with the result that the baby's vision was destroyed. Fanny became an American hymn writer and poetess who wrote over 8,000 hymns in her lifetime. Among her most widely-known hymns,"Jesus, keep me near the cross," "Blessed Assurance," "Saved by Grace," "Pass me not, O gentle Saviour." The soloist-Inez Andrews (1929 - 2012), known as the "High Priestess," started singing with the Caravans in the 1950's. She was a prominent lead singer on a lot of the early recordings by the group. Her most famous songs were "I'm Not Tired Yet," "I'm Willing To Wait," and her signature song was "Mary Don't You Weep." Inez remained with Caravans until the early 60's, when she left and formed her own group the Andrewettes. The group lasted for a few years; they had to opportunity to tour Europe. In 1964 Inez embarked on a solo career, her first solo album was "Letter To Jesus." Her solo recording career lasted well into the 90's. On several occasions she returned back to the Vans for some recordings, the last one was in 2006 on "Paved The Way." This rendering is from a self titled album "Close To Thee" her second solo album released in 1968. Disclaimer: Photographs and music copyright are owned by their originators. No infringement intended.
