(23 Nov 1995) T/I: 10:20:11 The UN Security Council suspended economic sanctions against Serbia on Wednesday (22/11) and approved a phased lifting of the arms embargo for all sides in the region. "This is the first concrete way of translating what happened at Dayton," US Ambassador Madeleine Albright told journalists outside the Security council chambers. Russia abstained from the resolution lifting the arms embargo with Ambassador Sergey Lavrov saying that lifting the embargo "does not fit into the logic" of ending the Balkans conflict. "We are not in favour of accumulating arms in the region but in restricting them and reducing them," he said. Bosnia's former foreign minister Muhamed Sacirbey, who resigned over the weekend, told journalists that Bosnia ultimately wants disarmament but not at the expense of its own defence.
