Trail : Mount Kobau and Chopaka lookout loop Date : August 4th 2025 Location : South Okanagan Grasslands Protected area, BC Trailhead location : Off Mount Kobau Road, about 1h00 (31 km) North West of Osoyoos Distance : 4.64 km Elevation gain : 320 m Starting time : 11h19 am Total time to complete: 1h17 Difficulty : Easy Trail traffic : Only met a couple while back at the trailhead After an early 10 km run through beautiful Osoyoos, we were on the lookout for something fun, not too long, and with rewarding views to cap off the morning. A lady at the visitor centre highly recommended Mount Kobau, so we packed lunch and headed that way. The drive up Mount Kobau is scenic but twisty. While most vehicles can make the climb, a higher clearance is definitely a plus. You drive nearly to the summit, which leaves just a short 1.3 km round-trip hike to the top. It only took us about 15 minutes to reach the peak, and the panoramic views were absolutely worth it, despite the smoky atmosphere! Of course, 1.3 km felt like just a warm-up, so when we noticed a nearby 3 km loop trail starting from the same trailhead, we couldn’t resist. After all, we’d already navigated that long, winding dirt road, might as well make the most of it! The trail to the west revealed a completely different landscape. Though a light haze of smoke muted the distant views, the hike was still incredibly enjoyable. This area is truly a gem. On the way back to Osoyoos, we made a stop at Spotted Lake, a remarkable and sacred place. Known as Lake Khiluk in the Nsyilxcən language, it’s a saline endorheic alkali lake located northwest of Osoyoos in the eastern Similkameen. The unique mineral patterns shimmering on the lake’s surface made it a memorable and meaningful discovery.
