PATREON: www.patreon.com/exploreoregon Pedestrian subways were a fairly common thing many years ago, given the city, allowing pedestrians a presumably safe way to cross busy streets. But as these tunnels started popping up several problems accompanied them: people getting attacked, loitering, trash building up, flooding from rain water, people getting injured falling down the stairs, etc. While these types of subways date back to before the 20th Century, they didn’t start showing up in Portland, Oregon until the 1920s. At this time they were usually built near a school or at busy intersections where one had to access the passing streetcar from the middle of the street. Before the 20s were over many locals were up in arms over the dangers and conditions of these underground passageways and they would have that stigma attached to them from then on. Needless to say, over the years these subways became less common to a point that there are barely any left. That said, you can find a few of them just south of downtown near the west approach to the Ross Island Bridge. That’s where this video takes off as I dive into this dark but interesting history!
