Overview: Jansenville in the Eastern Cape sits amidst a lot of natural beauty, but beauty doesn’t mean much in the face of a chronically hungry belly. Many of the area’s residents depend on social grants as their only income, and hunger isn’t a feeling unknown to much of the Jansenville community. Since 2001 though, one group of residents, led by Margaret Tamana, have been fiercely working to make sure that no-one in Jansenville is chronically hungry. Margaret came up with the idea for Sunshine Soup kitchen at the turn of the century, and soon rallied a few fellow community and family members to help her. The idea was to establish a place where all of Jansenville could drop in to ask for a hot meal and, consequently, ease the burden of at least hunger from the minds of their over-burdened fellow residents. They started with 10 people; just ten mouths to feed. Today, the team of 7 cook over 14,000 meals a month, not only to Jansenville residents but to anyone close to it and hungry. Nearly 400 people arrive at Margaret’s mother’s home (the team’s only headquarters) over the course of any given day; the rest of the area – the very young, the very old, and the very vulnerable – rely on the team’s panel van to bring a daily meal to them. That’s the routine, Mondays to Thursdays. On Fridays, the community can rely on simple soups and bread to give the team (and the budget) a bit of a break. Why, you wonder, would seven people spend this much time and effort for something they don’t really get paid for? Because no-one should go to bed hungry, Margaret will tell you. As simple as that. The soup kitchen’s only funding comes from Meals on Wheels, and this gets them through most months (although the volunteers often help by bringing food from their own homes), but ‘getting by’ isn’t sustainable. It’s becoming increasingly clear to Margaret that the project needs a building of sorts because her mother’s home is becoming too small. To this end, she has secured a plot of land close by from the municipality but is without the funds to build on it.
