World Lightweight Champion, Robert Duran, defends his title in a rematch against Esteban De Jesus, the first man to ever beat him. More info below... Roberto Duran is nowadays more commonly remembered for his rivalry with Sugar Ray Leonard during the 1980's but he actually had another fierce rivalry during the 1970's with a Puerto Rican legend, Esteban De Jesus. Duran and De Jesus both debuted in the late 1960's and both established themselves as credible Lightweight contenders. Duran was known for his attacking prowess and hands of stone where De Jesus was more technical but just as exciting and both fought frequently taking very little breaks between contests. Although small even for lightweight standards standing only 5'4" tall, De Jesus went undefeated in his first 26 fights and won the Puerto Rico Lightweight title in 1971. His first loss came 5 months later against WBA World Featherweight Champion, Antonio Gomez, in a non-title fight over 10 rounds. De Jesus bounced back with 7 wins in a row however to take his record to 33-1 before he stepped in against the undefeated Roberto Duran for the first time. Robert Duran at this stage had just won the WBA World Lightweight title but it was not on the line, and lucky for him to, because De Jesus knocked down and then out-boxed Duran over 10 rounds to pick up a relatively easy win. De Jesus followed that up by winning the vacant NABF Lightweight title in 1973 against undefeated Ray Lampkin over 12 rounds. De Jesus went on another 7 fight win streak after winning the NABF title before being awarded a shot at Roberto Duran's WBA Lightweight World title as seen in this fight here. His record heading in to the rematch was a very impressive 42-1. Roberto Duran recovered from his upset loss to De Jesus during their first encounter by going on his own 10 fight winning streak that included successfully defending his WBA World Lightweight title 3 times against the likes of OPBF Lightweight Champion Guts Ishimatsu, Commonwealth Super Lightweight and Australasian Lightweight Champion, Hector Thompson and former NABF Lightweight Champion, Jimmy Robertson, all by way of KO! His record at the time was 41-1. Both men had almost identical records and although De Jesus at this time was the only man to have beaten Duran, and convincingly, he was still the underdog as Duran was a World Champion and was coming off some impressive wins. 90 seconds into the fight however and it appeared history would repeat itself as Duran got tagged with a picture perfect hook to the chin that dropped him on the seat of his pants. Unlike the first fight however, Duran got to his feet as if nothing had happened and continued to fight at a furious pace. Although De Jesus had some success with his left hook during Rd 2, by the middle rounds Duran had cemented his dominance and in Rd 7 finally scored a knockdown of his own. De Jesus had no answer to Duran's power as the fight wore on and was fast becoming a human punching bag but he somehow stayed on his feet. In Rd 11 De Jesus finally succumbed to the onslaught, being dropped a second time and unable to gather the energy needed to pull himself off the canvas he was counted out. Duran well on his way to cementing his legacy as arguably the greatest lightweight of all time with the win but it was not the last time both men would face each other...
