Red Mountain Campground is located in the South Cow Mountain Recreation Area in the Mayacmas Mountains east of Ukiah. The pine-shaded campground offers 10 units suitable for tents, trailers and RVs. Reservations are not accepted. First come first served. Other features of the campground include fire rings, picnic tables, vault toilets and trash collection. Handicapped accessible features include fire rings, picnic tables, vault toilets, and RV sites. There is NO potable water available at Red Mountain Campground. Be aware that the site is located in an OHV (off-highway vehicle) area, thus prone to loud noise and traffic. Many people use it as a staging area during the day. Nights are very quiet. Before exploring the Cow Mountain Recreation Area. (Note: The area is subject to closure during periods of wet weather. During the rainy season, call the BLM office for current conditions. All roads are steep and winding and are not recommended for RVs.) The area offers beautiful views of Ukiah and Lake County; pockets of old-growth fir; several species of oak; willows; over 31 miles of stream; 13 reservoirs; and habitat for blacktail deer, bear, wild turkey, and other upland species. South Cow Mountain OHV Management Area consists of approximately 23,000 acres of public land that is managed for OHV use. Vehicle use within the recreation area is limited to the 94 miles of designated roads and trails and is appropriate for motorcycle, OHV, and 4-wheel drive vehicles. The trails are marked with numbered signs displaying difficulty ratings (ranging from easy to extremely difficult) and the recommended vehicle type depending on the width of the trail. https://www.blm.gov/visit/south-cow-m...
