How to Make Your Own Custom VRChat Avatar in 2025 (Easy Tutorial)

Making a custom model for VRChat doesn’t have to be complicated. With this 4-minute tutorial, you will learn everything you need to know to make a custom avatar for VRChat. Let’s take a look at the process step by step. Step 1️⃣: Download VRoid Studio. VRoid Studio is a free, easy-to-use 3D modeling program that is super beginner-friendly. There are other avatar builders out there, but VRoid Studio is one of our favorites because of how much you can customize without needing to have a ridiculous amount of 3D modeling knowledge. You don’t need to know programs like Maya or Blender to make a really strong customized model. Step 2️⃣: Download VRChat Creator Companion. Creator Companion is VRChat’s easy-to-use system for creating both avatars and worlds for VRChat. Download this off of the VRChat website once you are logged in and go ahead and launch it. Step 3️⃣: Add the VRM Converter for VRChat package. Next you will want to click the settings in your creator companion, go to the packages, scroll to the bottom, and add this repository link: https://esperecyan.github.io/VRMConve.... Add this to your project as the model we made in VRoid Studio is a called a .VRM file. It will need to be converted to work properly for VRChat. Step 4️⃣: Add VRM to Unity and convert it to a VRChat model. Drag and drop your VRM file into the Unity assets section. You can then select your model and go to the VRM0 tab and select Convert for VRChat. Step 5️⃣: Upload your avatar to VRChat. Go to the VRChat builder tab, fill out all the information, check the approval box, and click build and publish! Step 6️⃣: Switch to your avatar in VRChat.
