La Mantovana is a piece which appears to have its origins in Northern Italy. The melody was popularised as the tune to the song Fuggi, fuggi, fuggi in the Renaissance period. The melody has made its way across Europe and beyond. In Scotland, it is the melody to the song My Mistress is Prettie and in Ukraine it appears in traditional music in a major-key form. Also in Europe, the melody appears in a Romanian song which laments the demise of tradition in favour of modern developments. In the world of classical music, the French composer Camille Saint Saens used the melody within his Rhapsodie bretonne, but the most successful reincarnation must be Smetana's use of the theme in a compound time version as the opening theme to his classic Ma Vlast. Finally, a slower, more-stately version of the theme is the basis of the state anthem of Israel. This arrangement is suitable for advanced-intermediate players.
