This WWI song is a parody of a British music hall song titled "Hold Your Hand Out, Naughty Boy,"--which had been a big hit for Florrie Forde. Over in the trenches up to their eyes in clay Billy, Jack and Jimmie Joe Singing all the day When they see a German sticking up his snout They give him a chance to get out of France When they all shout Keep your head down Fritzie boy Keep your Head down Fritzie Boy! Last night in the pale moon light I saw you, I saw you! You were fixing your barb'd wire When we opened up – rapid fire! If you want to see your Vater in the Vaterland Keep your head down Fritzie boy Keep your Head down Fritzie Boy! Soon the Boche got wiser Hearing this every night He sent us a bunch of Rifle Grenades To give us all a fright But he couldn't stop us We let out a roar We'll give you your fill of old Kaiser Bill And this damned war! Keep your head down Fritzie boy Keep your Head down Fritzie Boy! Billy Murray & the American Quartet sing "Keep Your Head Down Fritzie Boy" on Victor 18467, recorded on April 17, 1918 (one year after America entered the war). The American Quartet at this time consisted of Billy Murray, Albert Campbell, John H. Meyer, and William F. Hooley. The song is by Lieutenant Gitz Rice. Lieutenant Gitz Rice lived from May 5, 1891, to October 16, 1947. This Canadian entertainer composed songs in the World War I era, the most popular being "Dear Old Pal of Mine.” Another hit was "Keep Your Head Down Fritzie Boy." Ingraham "Gitz" Rice was born in 1891 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, earning the nickname "Gitz" from his brother due to an odd walking style during his earliest years. Rice studied piano during his childhood and play piano on some recordings. Rice enlisted in the army as soon as Britain declared war on Germany in 1914, beginning as a gunnery officer. Following the Battle of Somme, Rice created a committee to develop concerts to entertain soldiers. He was removed from combat upon being gassed at Vimy Ridge in 1917, and returned to Canada. He supervised the entertainment of troops Rice moved to New York City in 1919 to pursue a career as songwriter and entertainer. He worked as a piano accompaniment player and continued to write songs. Rice stopped performing in 1930 but returned to the stage to entertain Canadian troops during World War II. Rice married silent film actress Ruby Hoffman in 1918.
