In June 1978, a student's phone call revealed that one of Manhattan's newest skyscrapers could collapse in the next strong storm, killing thousands. The engineer who designed it was the only person who knew. This is the story of the Citicorp Center crisis — and the decision that saved 10,000 lives. THE STORY William LeMessurier designed the Citicorp Center with columns in the middle of each side instead of at the corners. It was brilliant. Revolutionary. Celebrated. But when a student asked about diagonal winds hitting the corners, LeMessurier discovered a fatal flaw: the building's joints were bolted instead of welded. Under the right wind conditions, the 59-story tower would collapse. And those conditions occurred in New York City once every 16 years. THE CRISIS LeMessurier had to choose: stay silent and protect his career, or blow the whistle on himself and face professional destruction. As he prepared to come forward, Hurricane Ella — a Category 4 storm — formed in the Atlantic and headed straight for New York. The repairs were only half finished. THE RACE Teams of welders worked through the night in secret, reinforcing every joint while the city slept. Emergency evacuation plans were drawn up. 2,500 Red Cross volunteers were placed on standby. And then, with the storm 300 miles offshore, something changed. SOURCES This story is based on Joe Morgenstern's 1995 New Yorker article "The Fifty-Nine-Story Crisis," William LeMessurier's lectures at Harvard and MIT, and engineering case studies published in structural engineering journals.
