THE STORY William LeMessurier designed the Citicorp Center with columns in the middle of each side instead of at the corners. It was brilliant. Revolutionary. Celebrated. But when a student asked about diagonal winds hitting the corners, LeMessurier discovered a fatal flaw: the building's joints were bolted instead of welded. Under the right wind conditions, the 59-story tower would collapse. And those conditions occurred in New York City once every 16 years. As he prepared to come forward, Hurricane Ella — a Category 4 storm — formed in the Atlantic and headed straight for New York. The repairs were only half finished.
