I have been interested in creating depth by using multiple print layers of Akua Intaglio Inks on my DIY gel plates. My friend, Dave of Dave's Acrylic Creations, has also been interested in creating depth and found a wonderful Ukrainian artist, Lena Kalinicheva or @vinillna. She paints and prints leaves and then does a diluted wash of color over the leaf prints. After several layers, she has created the illusion of depth. I wanted to modify her tecnique to be able to use it on Gel plates. This is my third effort. On this series, I am using 2 different mulberry papers. I selected mulberry paper because they are strong and absorbent, but I was not happy with the results. They were unable to absorb the ink from the layers of ink that I used. I will continue to experiment with different papers to find ones that can handle the multiple layers i want to work with. The major change I made to vinillna's technique is to create a second print to pick up the ink on both sides of the leaves. My "wash" is a very thin, transparent layer of ink.
