A meningioma is a type of tumor that forms in the meninges, the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. While most meningiomas are benign (non-cancerous), they can still cause significant symptoms depending on their size and location. Common symptoms include headaches, seizures, vision problems, memory issues, and weakness or numbness—though some meningiomas are found incidentally on imaging with no symptoms at all. Diagnosis typically involves MRI or CT scans, and confirmation may require a biopsy or surgical removal. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and resources like PubMed and the Mayo Clinic, treatment depends on the tumor’s size, location, growth rate, and symptoms. Options may include observation, surgical resection, and in some cases radiation therapy—especially if the tumor recurs or cannot be fully removed. Most meningiomas grow slowly, but regular monitoring and expert care are essential to protect brain function and quality of life.
