Here's a breakdown of the entire video: 0:00 - Introduction 0:53 - Unboxing the FB 500 4:26 - Connecting to the FB 5:15 - Unboxing FB 400 7:00 - Installing the FB to Smoker (Drum Smoker) 12:33 - The FB App 14:46 - Testing (Smoking Chicken & Beef) 20:09 - Results FlameBoss (https://www.flameboss.com/) is known in the barbecue industry as the grandfather of thermostatic smoker pit controllers. Their controllers have came a long way from the release of the original Flame Boss device in 2013. The 500, is Wi-Fi enabled but is also capable of connecting wirelessly to your phone without a Wi-Fi network. There are three ways to connect to the Flame Boss 500: 1. Cloud 2. Local 3. Direct Cloud = Using your WiFi internet connection, you can hookup to Flame Boss’s severs with your phone to control your cook via the internet and log data. This method allows you to control and monitor the temperature of your pit and the fan anywhere you have access to the internet. Local = Using your home’s intranet (router) you can control and monitor the pit temperature and fan from your phone within range of your Wi-Fi network (no internet required). Direct = Your phone connects directly to the Flame Boss 500 through wireless technology built into the device. No network needed. You have two options when purchasing the 500: 1. Universal 2. Kamado Universal = This fan is more powerful (45 CFM) than the Kamado, and comes with the attachments needed to ingrate the fan into many different types of grills/smokers including, but not limited to: Drum Smokers Barrel Smokers Cabinet and Offset Style Smokers Weber Smokey Mountain Weber Kettle Grills Char-Griller offset & barrel Char-Broil charcoal grills Most drum smokers including UDS (Ugly Drum Smokers) Kamado = A less powerful fan (12 CFM) than the Universal. It includes a window plate that makes it easy to incorporate into the following smokers: Kamado Joe – All Sizes Primo Grills – All Sizes BGE – All sizes Saffire Grill & Smoker Grill Dome – All Sizes Vision Grills Classic Broil King Keg – 2000 & 4000 Char-Griller AKORN Kamado These “Kamado” smokers require less air flow to maintain temperature, hence the 12 CFM fan instead of the 45 CFM one. FLAME BOSS 500 VS 400 The main difference between the 500 and 400 is the fact that controller is built into the 400 while the 500 comes with an external controller that can be controlled and manipulated directly on the controller itself without using your smart phone. Additionally, the 400 is about $100 cheaper than the 500 making it a more affordable pit controller. You’ll also notice the 400 only has two probe ports while the 500 has four. Both the 400 and 500 feature variable speed motors. Skip to the end of our video to get our take on how the FlameBoss 500 stacks up to other thermostatic BBQ controllers.
