The "Military Road 79", as it was classified by the Italian Army, is a magnificent dirt road that runs along the left side of the Val di Susa until it reaches the eastern side of the Bardonecchia basin. The road is only open to motor vehicles on Wednesdays and Saturdays and yes, better check before ! Some facts: the massif of Mount Jafferau is 2,805 meters above sea level in the of Bardonecchia area in Piemonte Italy. Along the way there are many fortifications and military works built at the end of the nineteenth century and 2nd world war , belonging to the Jafferau-Pramand defensive line as strategic point of defense of the Valley. Main fortifications are Fenils, Pramand, Föens and Jafferau. How to reach: After the Bivio Pramand the place Moncellier , near the Chapel of S. Ippolito is the begging of a dirt road. The road is quite well maintained with some rocky points , suitable for a bigger bikes too such my BMW 12000 GS. From this point, prudent driving is recommended and with the respect for cyclists and 4x4 cars . Immediately after a first bridge over the Rio Secco the road begins to climb. Along the road you can see the stone inscription "DUX", a technical masterpiece of the ability of the local workforce specialized in working building stones on the ground, unfortunately vandalized in the spring of 2016. The road culminates at the FORTE DELLO JAFFERAU at 2,805 meters but the real beauty is the spectacular GALLERIA DEL PRAMAND, also known as the GALLERIA DEI SARACENI. It is 876 meters long under the of Mount Seguret . It was used between the two Great Wars. The tunnel was open after maintenance works in 2018 for the passage of vehicles and people. At the top of the mountain stands the Jafferau Fort, a fortification built in the nineteenth century at an altitude of 2,800 meters in an esplanade that sees no other peaks nearby. The fort, now in ruins, was intended for artillery positions and is the second highest fortification in the Cottian Alps after the one that stands on Mount Chaberton.
