The global octopus market and sustainability opportunities for southwest Indian Ocean production. Presented by Pedro Ferreiro of the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership SWIOCeph Virtual Event, 13–15 October 2020 Creating a platform for knowledge sharing Joined by organisations such as Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, Blue Ventures, the Mwambao Coastal Community Network and others, the MSC and guest speaker discussed the challenges and opportunities for sustainable octopus fisheries in the southwest Indian Ocean. Hosted with funding support from WWF Sweden, the event offered an engaging webcast line-up featuring talks on octopus stock assessment, fishery improvement efforts, and the global market for octopus. About SWIOCeph SWIOCeph is one of several MSC Pathway projects working with fisheries stakeholders around the world to create a pathway to sustainability for small-scale fisheries and fisheries in the Global South. The project uses the MSC framework and tools to engage and support stakeholders and octopus fishing communities in working towards more sustainable fishing practices. Additionally, the project provides a platform for stakeholder engagement and collaboration. Octopus is traditionally caught by communities throughout the Indian Ocean and is a valuable source of protein and income. Increased global interest in octopus product has also created export market opportunities, with Kenya, Tanzania and Madagascar as the largest octopus exporters in the region. Fishing sustainably will help these communities gain access to long-term social, environmental and economic benefits. For more information, visit www.msc.org/swioceph
