This one has a interesting tuning, and it took me a while to figure out the best way to record it — so if you know more about this stuff than I do, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. To my ear, this track sounds like it was either recorded faster and then slowed down for release (or possibly recorded slower and sped up afterwards). After playing along with it a bunch of times, it feels like it wants to be faster. My best guess is that it was processed using a tape machine or some kind of analog method, where playback speed wasn’t stable. That would explain the subtle pitch drift you hear throughout the song. It’s not obvious at first, but when you try to play along in a fixed tuning, you notice at several points where the tuning is questionable. Here’s how is what I landed on: The tuning sits somewhere between standard E and Eb (half-step down). On average, it’s about 64 cents lower than standard tuning (which puts it about 36 cents above Eb). Using my HX Stomp, I did the following: 1. Tuned down a half-step to Eb 2. Tuned back up 36 cents to land in the right general range I also lowered the bass slightly in the mix to help make any tuning inconsistencies less noticeable. It sounds in tune in some places, and in others it sounds a bit off. I couldn't get it perfect. I’ve transcribed the song in B minor, even though it’s actually closer to Bb minor in pitch. There is a good discussion here about it: / help_explaining_grease_by_frankie_valli Thanks for watching — and again, I’d love to hear your thoughts or corrections if you’ve got insights into this kind of tuning or recording technique!
