Known as Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S), this terminology further defines the scope of symptoms and includes men - as both sexes can suffer from serious symptoms related to inadequate caloric intake. This syndrome can affect all athletes - not just professionals. Most commonly seen in sports that emphasize leanness (running, ballet, dance, wrestling, figure skating, swimming, diving, gymnastics, etc), RED-S can happen even in weekend warriors who are looking to lose weight while increasing their training. Symptoms are diverse and include multiple physical as well as mental emotional symptoms. Treatment involves: 1. Rest and rebalancing of energy intake 2. Hormonal support - balancing thyroid, adrenal, estrogen, testosterone, progesterone 3. Sleep - regulation of cortisol, insulin and growth hormone 4. Mental/Emotional support for disordered eating, anxiety and depression. We cover it all in this video on Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S).
