How gang culture and organised crime operations are expanding beyond the Cape flats

Gang membership and organised crime is literally in every corner of the Cape metro. According to a report by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime, areas from Ocean View to Camps Bay, Kraaifontein to Fisantekraal in Durbanville, all the way to Nomzamo in Strand are being infiltrated by Cape flats gangs. Gangs such as the Americans, Hard Livings and more recently the Fancy Boys are operating beyond its traditional turf on the Cape Flats, taking its drug trade to more affluent areas like Camps Bay. Lester Kiewit speaks to Jenni Irish-Qhobosheane, a researcher at the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime. This interview took place on 4 April 2024.
