Season 1: The Band Directors, Episode 1: Zach Santos (Vista Ridge HS) | December 9, 2019 --- Zach Santos graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in music studies in 2018. While attending UT, he earned his certificates in trumpet performance and business foundations from the McCombs School of Business. Most recently, he received his Master of Business Administration from Western Governors University. Zach currently serves as a choreographer, consultant, program coordinator, and clinician for many programs throughout the United States. He is lucky to be able to share his passion with countless students. His marching arts experience includes Program Coordinating for the Guardians, teaching Visual for Blue Knights, Phantom Regiment, and Rhythmic Force, and giving clinics at System Blue and Blue Knights Experience Camps. He has presented at the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention, the Texas Music Educators Convention, and the Midwest Clinic. Zach is also a proud employee of SASI – The Leadership People, teaching students throughout the country about leadership. Zach taught at Vista Ridge High School in Cedar Park, Texas, from 2018 to 2024. During these six years, the band won the 2018 UIL 6A State Marching Band Championship, was a 2021 BOA Grand Nationals Finalist, and marched in the 2023 Rose Parade. The band is a consistent finalist at all BOA regionals and local contests. His concert ensembles received sweepstakes, and he has enjoyed conducting the Concert and Symphonic bands and Wind Symphony. His performance experience includes marching with the Guardians (2013), the Crossmen (2014), the Blue Knights (15-16), and the world-champion Blue Devils (2017). While at UT, he performed with the Wind Ensemble under Jerry Junkin and the Symphony Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Symphony Band, Con Moto, Caribbean Ensemble, and Plan Sonidero. He occasionally performs as a trumpet player in the Cedar Park Winds, local churches, and with the Austin Brass Collective. In his free time, Zach enjoys spending time with his wife, Kendall, and their dog, Hudson. He is excited to grow his family this December with a baby on the way! You can find him fishing or enjoying the outdoors when not with family or doing band. --- Is there a guest that you’d like to hear on Sketchbook?
