Bo Adams, director of Pitts Theology Library and Margaret A. Pitts Assistant Professor in the Practice of Theological Bibliography, discusses the September Testament, Martin Luther’s 1522 translation of the New Testament into German from its original Greek. Theologically, it marked the beginning of a new emphasis on reading the Bible in the vernacular, and also served as a cultural and linguistic watershed that would provide the standard for High German in years to come. Pitts Theology Library has the book on display in fall 2022 as part of an exhibition celebrating the 500th anniversary of its publication, the context in which it was produced, and the effect it had on the reading of Scripture during and after the Reformation.
