We live in a high rainfall area where soil nutrients get washed away all the time. We have long been interested in adding charcoal to the soil to help improve the soil structure and help keep the nutrients in. The last time I tried to do some trials the geese ate them all -- so I will try harder this time. As you probably know, charcoal lasts in the soil for hundreds of years (depending on acidity) and because of its physical and chemical structure, it attracts and holds onto water, oxygen and various other useful compounds. The tiny fissures in its structure make a home for microbes of all sorts -- which in turn interact with the soil chemistry and so benefit the soil as a whole, and anything growing in it. So, in theory, we can grow better plants with fewer imputs. This is a trial involving Perpetual Beet, Radish, Grass and Cucumber.
