Data centers account for more than 4 percent of US electricity consumption, a number that experts expect to at least double by 2030. Driving that growth is the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, which requires vast amounts of electricity for computing power. Developers of artificial intelligence and data center operators–or hyperscalers–require low-cost and reliable electricity to enable this technological revolution, but current power systems are ill-equipped to meet electricity demands for computing. While hyperscalers have announced agreements with low-carbon energy producers to provide clean power for the expanding AI industry, the United States and many other countries need more affordable, reliable and low-carbon electricity for this booming sector. This panel discusses how the energy sector and hyperscalers are meeting the energy needs of a rapidly expanding AI industry today. Panelists examine the energy sources, technologies and financing required to meet the energy demands for AI, as well as how AI as a tool will have impact throughout the energy sector. Speakers: • Kathleen L. Barrón (Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy and Growth Officer, Constellation) • Michael Bruce (Partner, Emerson Collective) • Ashley Finan (Global Fellow, Center on Global Energy Policy) • Melanie Nakagawa (Chief Sustainability Officer, Microsoft) Moderator: David Sandalow (Inaugural Fellow, Center on Global Energy Policy)
