Commercial fishing has caused enormous damage to marine ecosystems globally (see David Attenborough's 2025 documentary "Ocean"). Unfortunately, the overharvesting of shallow reef environments around the world has also been responsible for massive ecosystem damage. Spearfishing and collecting (for example lobsters and shellfish), has caused extreme damage to these environments globally. This damage has been done both by casual recreational fishers, as well as commercial operators. The ecological impacts of these harvesting activities remain under-studied, and hugely under-regulated, around the planet. The damage has been "out of sight, out of mind" to both the public, and government bodies charged with the regulation of fishing activities, as well as agencies responsible for the protection of natural ecosystems. Although most Australians who regularly spearfish are in a state of denial, there are important (and prominent) exceptions, such as the well-known spearfishing champion, Valerie Taylor, who has been vocal about the damage done by the sport.
