(17 Sep 2013) A controversial bull running event, the Toro de la Vega, went ahead in the small town of Tordesillas on Tuesday despite being picketed by animal rights protesters. A 580-kilogramme (1,279-pound) bull named 'Volcano' gored a news agency photographer and one other person during the run, before it was speared to death at the annual festival. The centuries old Toro de la Vega is regarded as barbaric by animal rights activists, and before the event Spain's PACMA (Party Against Bullfighting, Cruelty and Mistreatment of Animals) gave a petition to Parliament with 85,000 signatures demanding it be banned. A line of police kept the protest contained during the event, at one point detaining one man. The bull gored Agence France Presse freelance photographer Pedro Armestre in the right thigh after it was set loose amid thousands of people and riders on horse back carrying spears. AFP says in a statement that Armestre was conscious and taken to a hospital for surgery. Another unidentified person also suffered a non-life threatening goring.
