This video is about Tail Feathers Pt.3 This video continues to show how to make feathers. The bird is a Spot Breasted Oriole, Mod Podge, Matte and water, mix to make like the thickness of milk. Trim the wool feathers to the desired size and apply the tail with core wool. Once the tail is attached to the bird then use the appropriate colors to finish the bird off. The foundation of your sculpture is most important, if that is not convincing, well then..... When beginning a piece, I use the Plain 38 triangle needle - general sculpting. .......the Purple 40 spiral - rapid, fine, for finishing. .......and my favorite is the Yellow 42 triangle - finishing the surface and fine detail. The main focus are proportion and symmetry. The key is to know what to edit and what to keep. Also how to lay the colors evenly and when to apply heavy texture to create the look you want. Think about the personality of the animal you want to portray. Practically anything can be needle felted. Give it a try. Sometimes you need more than one reference when working on your creatures. Having a good reference is paramount. After a while many characteristics become committed to memory. Make sure you have the foundation the way you want it before applying the color and details. If you can draw you can sculpt. Work all sides simultaneously. Take your time executing the details, too much detail can become too busy. Try not to enclose a shape, it becomes a distraction. Felt from natural fibers like wool is considered to be the oldest known textile. Using barbed needles the end product is produced by matting, condensing and pressing fibers together. Why anyone came up with bird brain, I am not sure, birds are smart. I love to needle felt birds, there are so many different species, and they are very colorful.
