The volume of a cone is 1/3 the volume of a cylinder that has an equal base and height. This video shows you both Mathematical and by filling a cylinder with water using three cones. Hope it helps you understand why the volume of a cone is 1/3pi radius squared Transcript Hi welcome to MooMooMath Today I would like to present a demonstration in which I show that the volume of a cone is 1/3 that of a cylinder. The base of the cylinder is equal to the base of the cone,and you can see that it is the same base and has the same base. I will prove Mathematically and with a demonstration by filling them up with water. The formula for volume for a cylinder equals pi times radius squared times height. I measured the diameter and divided it in half in order to get the radius and I found it to be 2.5 cm squared. I will use 3.14 for pi and the height was 5 cm. after measuring. When I multiplied this I found the volume to be 98. 125. Next, for the cone I know it has a similar base and height so I will take 1/3 times 3.14 times 2.5 squared times 5 which equals 98.125 divided by 3 which equals 32.7 centimeters cubed. This is what it looks lie Mathematically. The volume of the cone is 1/3 the volume of the cylinder. Now I will fill the objects up with water. Now that we have worked out the formula Mathematically it takes 3 cones to fill up one cylinder that have an equal base and height. I will fill them up with water and see if it works out. Here is number one. Here comes number 2. Finally, here is number 3. It should fill up to the very top. Here we go.. 1,2, and 3 and it is at the very top. Again, the formula for a cone is 1/3 pi radius square times height, and the cylinder is pi times radius square times height. We proved that it takes three cones to fill up 1 cylinder.
