The Ancient Egyptians were quite advanced in their approach to personal hygiene, and they even created an early version of toothpaste. While it wasn't the minty kind we use today, it was still effective in cleaning their teeth. Their toothpaste was made from a blend of powdered ash, burnt eggshells, and pumice stone. These materials were abrasive enough to scrub away food particles and plaque. Pumice, a volcanic rock, was particularly useful because it was rough enough to clean teeth without being overly damaging. Hygiene was very important to the Egyptians, and their toothpaste was just one example of their care in this area. They also used brushes made from twigs or bones to apply this mixture to their teeth. Although their toothpaste wasn’t fresh-smelling or minty, it reveals how ahead of their time the Egyptians were when it came to personal care. It’s fascinating to realize that the dental practices we take for granted today have roots that go back thousands of years, long before the invention of modern toothpaste and toothbrushes. This early form of dental care shows how the Egyptians valued both health and appearance in their society.
